Flachau (AUT) - Giant Slalom, 09.03.2002.
Victory and World Cup for Sonja Nef

Sonja Nef found back her best form in the right moment at Flachau - the charming Swiss World Champion dominated the last giant slalom of the season and clinched her second consecutive GS World Cup title after two excellent runs.

Her last rival, Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister came in 6th - too far to put more pressure on Nef.

At the end of the race, the Olympic bronze medallist beat by 84/100 of a second Sweden's Anna Ottosson, who has not reached the podium since her win at Cortina d'Ampezzo two years ago, while Finland's Tanja Poutiainen celebrated her first podium in the specialty in finishing 3rd at 1,53 seconds.

Italy's Karen Putzer was back among the best with a promising 4th place ahead of Sweden's veteran Ylva Nowen.

Anja Paerson, 7th after injuring a hand in hitting a gate, moved up to 3rd place in the final GS standings - confirming once more her excellent season in both technical events.

Croatia's wonderwoman Janica Kostelic was a strong 8th after starting in 30th position in the first run. It was her best GS finish beside her Olympic race. But the triple Olympic champion was more concerned by her brother's slalom race than her own competition.

Nef, who has not won a race since her last triumph at Maribor early January, was very determined today on course - recovering all her momentum after feeling quite stress earlier in the morning.

"I felt bad when I woke up this morning - no doubt, the pressure was on me" she explained after the race. "I slowly found back my confidence as I approached the start-time. Then in the start house, I was totally myself again - confident and very aggressive. I nailed down a great first run and then it was easier in the second one. I wanted to win once more because I was still frustrated by my 3rd place in Park City. I was aiming for more at the Olympics because I skied really fast in training. But on race day, I could not confirm my potential".

"This second GS title means a lot for me now and I was ready to take great risks to win it. It gives me a strong moral for the coming summer - I plan to continue to compete at least another year. I'm healthy and enjoying my life on the tour. I could go one for a while if I remain in good shape".

In Sunday's slalom, Tanja will again fight for a top result along France Laure Pequegnot and America's Kristina Koznick, who are also aiming for victory in the slalom standings. Also very motivated are Janica Kostelic, Anja Paerson and Sonja Nef. Last year, she won the last slalom at Are.

Janica hoped that the racing condition would be better than for the giant slalom. "The course was really in bad shape when I started this morning, there was no way for me to clock a fast time" she explained.

"In the afternoon, things were better but I don't care too much. I was so happy because of Ivica's success in the slalom".

"It's a great day for all of us - to win a World Cup title on the men's tour is pretty impressive, especially starting with bib #64 in the first race. I'm really proud of him, he's such a great brother".

Janica still feels some pain at her thumb and in her body after her crash in the Super-G. Her main goal is to remain as healthy as possible before starting her spring training camps.

But with her usual relaxed attitude, she could fight for another top-3 finish in that last slalom.
