Croatian Olympic Comittee
Giant slalom, Maribor (SLO), 25.01.2003.
Janica tiered but still finished 17th
It’s with a disappointing 17th place that Janica Kostelic ended the last giant slalom prior the World Championships in St Moritz – far behind the winner Anja Paerson. Quite a surprise after her outstanding 2nd place last week in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The triple Olympic champion lost 2, 20 seconds on the Swede in the first run. She was faster in the afternoon, but not good enough to achieve the same extraordinary comeback as in Italy. It’s quite possible that the skier from Zagreb, encouraged by thousands of fans here, begins to feel the fatigue of her intensive World Cup program. She was one of the few athletes this season to have started in all the competitions!

She admitted that she had a bad day, but she seems also confident looking ahead. Next week, she will rest at the sea shore where she already regained her form last winter before the Olympics in Salt Lake City.

“It’s for sure not a good result that I reached today in this giant slalom but I am here and healthy. I competed in 36 races this year so you can’t be always at the top in all of them! “Janica said “So I’m finishing 17th, but it doesn’t change anything for me. It’s not good, it’s not bad. I was 2nd in Cortina, and I didn’t scored points in Bormio, again 2nd in Semmering. So, one race can not tell what you’re doing in your season”.
“My skiing was OK, I did not make any mistake, but the problem was that I was so slow. I can’t really explain what happened, I just don’t like that slope too much. I have never skied well here. I was 5th in giant slalom two years ago, nothing terrible!”

“I trained a lot here but still, I never ski well on this hill. That’s a fact. It’s really an easy course. When the course is too easy, I can’t ski well, then it gets complicated for me and on the other hand, when the course is complicated, then it becomes easy for me. It sounds strange but it’s working that way”.

“I am not tired, even if I’m racing all events, I just feel pretty sleepy. I’m not feeling so good. I would say, it doesn’t really matter how I feel, it’s just that I haven’t skied the way I can do. I am not disappointed with that race, I won the points, and that’s important. We’ll meet again tomorrow!”
