Giant Slalom, Cortina d'Ampezzo (ITA), 19.01.2003.
2nd place for Janica Kostelic in Cortina d’Ampezzo
Janica Kostelic concluded her Cortina d’Ampezzo week with a superb 2nd place in the most demanding giant slalom of the season won by her great rival in slalom, Sweden’s Anja Paerson. Paerson, who never won a World Cup giant slalom in her career, beat the Croat by 1,10 seconds while Italy’s Karen Putzer, the winner in Val d’Isère and Semmering, was 3rd at 1,43.

Michaela Dorfmeister, another tough rival of Janica in the Overall World Cup standings, was 5th – which allowed the skier from Zagreb to increase her lead in the Overall World Cup standing. She has already scored 1240 points – almost as much in 2001 when she clinched her first Crystal globe.
Putzer has a delay of 503 points on her. Dorfmeister is 3rd at 601 points!

Janica, a far 14th after the first run set by Anja’s father Anders, took more risks in the afternoon which she clearly dominated. She was over half a second faster than Paerson. This helped her to move-up in the standings and she equaled her best performance from Park City when she was 2nd behind Birgit Heeb-Batliner from Liechtenstein. It’s the first time that she is skiing so great in giant slalom since her Olympic victory last season! In Bormio, she fell while setting the fastest total time.

“I was upset by my first run and I wanted to finish the week here with a better feeling” she said after the race. “I felt tired this morning. I skied without momentum. I don’t know what happened, I just could not push on my skis. I was skiing as in a Super-G”.
“Fortunately I was able to find back my rhythm during the warm up before the second run. At the start, I thought about my brother and that I want to feel happy while driving back to Croatia. I attacked well the course afterwards and I’m really pleased by this podium finish which I missed in Bormio two weeks ago”.

“The fact that Ivica skied well in Wengen also gave me much determination. I also thought that I will finally drive to Zagreb this afternoon which makes me very happy too”.
“It has been a busy month so far and it’s nice to go back in Croatia. If the conditions are fine I may train nearby Zagreb to prepare the next races in Maribor”.

After her race and the prize-giving ceremony, Janica rushed into the VIP tent to watch her brother’s race on TV with her staff and her father. She was more than happy to see im reaching once more the podium in the race he won last year.

“This is excellent, I’m really pleased for him because it must have been really hard to be totally focused on the race. It was an important race for him and it’s great that he is doing so well”.

After Maribor, Janica will make a short break and relax at the seaside in Selce before moving on to St Moritz where she will compete in all events. Contrary to Salt Lake City where she skipped the downhill to better focus on the combined, Janica plans for the moment to also compete on the course on which she suffered her bad crash in December 1999.

“We will see how I feel after the first race, the Super-G. The combined is after the downhill but there is enough time to recover in between. I don’t know what will happen there. I don’t think about how many medals I can win there, the most important is to have a great time there. I know that everybody wants me to do better than in St Moritz but medals events are unpredictable. If the weather is fine and if I remain healthy, I should be able to do well in one of two disciplines”.

“There are a lot of good skiers out there and I can be sure that contenders as Anja Paerson will fight very hard to beat me. It’s difficult to fight for medals after competing in so many World Cup races to amass as much points as possible. I’ll try and we will see”.
