Janica Kostelic improves to 5th place
Janica Kostelic reached another strong top-10 place today in the second Super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo won by her good friend Renate Goetschl who beat Alexandra Meissnitzer by 26/100 of a second.
The triple Olympic champion missed the podium by 40/100 but she didn’t care too much about this because she didn’t try too hard to get there today. Karen Putzer, her closest rival in the Overall World Cup, only scored a few more points than her today in coming in 4th just ahead of her. Michaela Dorfmeister skied out once more and lost more ground on her as Carole Montillet, only 9th.

Janica was glad to see the 2000 Overall World Cup champion achieve this strong comeback ten months after injuring her knee in a crash in Lenzerheide’s downhill.
“We talked a little in Lake Louise where she was not so happy about her performances. She looked sad and I tried to encourage her to keep on fighting” Janica recalls.
“It’s always hard to come back after any injury. She did well here two days ago and it’s not such a surprise to see her at the top today. The course set by my father was technically more demanding but also very interesting for excellent skiers as she is”.
“I don’t understand why so many girls skied out after a few gates, you had to use your brain a little more today” she added. “I’m glad for her because she came back”.
“The course was not a problem – some skiers just struggled! The snow was perfect, yet you needed to think a little more.”
“I’m happy with my performance – top-10 after a safe run is always nice! I didn’t charge as much as usual because I don’t feel as powerful as earlier this season. As usual I didn’t take extra risks – I was just looking for another strong and clean run. I didn’t ski the steep part that well”.
“I didn’t make big mistakes, just losing a few hundredths in each gate!”
“I felt OK. I’m worried about my brother because I can imagine how tough it can be for him now”.
“The downhill is fine too. I had major problems in the downhill, but again I didn’t try very hard in training neither. A top-20 would also be fine Saturday!”

“I’m following the same program as before – stay healthy and keep a maximum of energy for the Worlds in St Moritz where I may compete in all events! It’s hard so I have to spare my energy now. I don’t want to push my limits”.

Janica also made positive comments about the comeback of Hermann Maier who she has not met since joining him on the podium in Are during the 2001 Finals. “He is really brave, he chose tough races to come back and he did well so far” she said. “He seems to have changed. He must have learned something in the meantime! I heard he was nice to Ivica the other day when they met at Adelboden”.

Janica Kostelic may ski a conservative race on Saturday to keep some momentum for the Sunday’s giant slalom – the first since her accident in Bormio. The demanding Tofana course should suit her style on Sunday – she may be luckier this time.
