Another top-10 for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic added another top-10 place to her collection of good results in finishing 7th in Cortina d’Ampezzo where the first of two Super-G races took place by perfect weather and course conditions on the superb “Tofana” course. The triple Olympic Champion achieved a safe run down the hard course and only lost 81/100 on the winner, France’s Carole Montillet and less than three tenths on Germany’s Hilde Gerg, who came in 3rd.

This strong result helped her to reinforce her lead in the Overall World Cup standings because her nearest rivals, Italy’s Karen Putzer and Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister both ended behind her. Putzer, skiing in front of her fans, only reached a disappointing 10th place, two tenths behind Janica, while Dorfmeister was a far 12th. Only Montillet who celebrated her third victory this winter and her fifth podium in six weeks was able to make up terrain on Janica today. The French champion, a clear leader in the Super-G standings, is also favored to dominate the next speed events here – another Super-G on Friday and a downhill on Saturday. She should be able to get closer to Janica after this Italian weekend, but her weakness in the technical disciplines should prevent her to become too dangerous for the skier from Zagreb. The Croat superstar was satisfied by her run even if she didn’t ski as properly as usual in the middle of the course. Lack of training in the speed events partly explains her problems today but she should be able to improve her level in the coming days. She was already 5th in 1999 in this Italian resort where she began her World Cup career in January 1998! “I made some mistakes in the upper part of the course” she admitted after the competition. “It was fast but top-10 is fine for me in this moment”. Janica’s goal this month is to stay healthy and to save as much energy as possible before the World Championships in St Moritz. Her crash in Bormio in giant slalom may influence her attitude in the coming speed events in which she may not take a maximum of risks.
Another training run in downhill in planned for Thursday before the next race on Friday.
