Birthday victory
Four years ago, Janica Kostelic celebrated her 17th birthday in St Anton in winning her first World Cup competition – a combined – after finishing 3rd in a slalom. This year she achieved even a greater performance in crushing her rivals in a slalom in Bormio which she won by more than two seconds! A day after her impressive crash in a giant slalom here, the triple Olympic Champion fought even harder to win her eighteenth World Cup race in her career after dominating both runs as in Semmering.

Only a handful of skiers won slaloms by such a margin – and nobody in recent years! Elisabeth Goergl, another young talent from the promising Austrian team, came in 2nd at 2,08 seconds while Sweden’s Anja Paerson reached her second podium within 24 hours in finishing 3rd ahead of other specialists as Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen and Switzerland’s Sonja Nef, the winner in the giant slalom.
This fifth season victory allowed Janica to break the barrier of the thousand points and increase her lead in the Overall and the slalom standings. Karen Putzer is now 2nd with a delay of almost five hundred points while Michaela Dorfmeister is 3rd at 535 points. It’s difficult to imagine that Janica may be beaten in the coming months even if an accident is always possible as everybody saw on Saturday. Janica who was welcomed by a Birthday Cake presented by the Organizers in the finish area, was more worried by her brother’s performance in the slalom in Kranjska Gora as she explained it in her interview. Celebrations are obviously not so important in the Kostelic family. “As long as you’re healthy, life is nice” said her mother Marica in Kranjska Gora where she attended the men’s slalom. A few hours after the races, she finally managed to phone to Ivica who attended the post-race press conference. The assistance and Ivica song her the traditional “Happy Birthday to you” song over the phone which she enjoyed a lot.
How many more races or points she is going to score in the coming weeks, or how many medals she may capture in St Moritz is not too important for her in this moment. She mostly wants to rest and find back her momentum after her bad crash… Happy birthday to you Janica!
