Janica Kostelic crashed on her way to victory in GS
After an impressive series of top-3 finishes, Janica Kostelic failed to end the demanding giant slalom in Bormio won by Switzerland’s World Champion Sonja Nef. The triple Olympic Champion who clocked the second best time in the first run, only 40/100 behind the defending GS World Cup Champion, crashed in the last gates of the final run while aiming for a clear new best time.

At the second intermediate time, she was 40/100 of a second ahead of Sweden’s Anja Paerson, who came in 2nd in that race. Kostelic was apparently also faster that Nef at the moment where she skied out on her way to her first victory in a World Cup giant slalom. She ended her spectacular fall under a banner fixed along the course and slightly injured herself at a thumb during her accident. “Janica feels some pain at an arm and her thumb but she should be able to race the slalom on Sunday” said Vedran Pavlek, the manager of the alpine team. A very consistent skier who never races over her limits, Janica seldom fell out in races. The last time she suffered such a bad accident was in December 2001 in Val d’Isère after straddling a gate with an arm. Obviously the skier from Zagreb was charging hard today at the end of her second run to celebrate her first win of the new year. This accident didn’t really affect to much her position in the various World Cup standings. She is still a solid leader in the Overall rankings but she lost a great occasion to take over the lead in the GS classifications. Michaela Dorfmeister and Karen Putzer, two of her toughest rivals finished 3rd and 4th in that race. In Sunday’s slalom, she will hopefully prove that her confidence and her momentum has not been affected by today’s problem.
