Janica finished 4th in Sestriere
Janica Kostelic finished 4th in the first World Cup “K.O.” slalom raced today in Italy’s Sestriere where she won three times in this demanding competition. After three smooth qualification runs, the Croatian Superstar could not prevent Sweden’s Anja Paerson to win for the second consecutive time a slalom in the Italian ski resort. Paerson beat by 2/100 of a second Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen while Austria’s great talent Nicole Hosp was third.

Well a 4th place here is fine even if I’m used to other results here” Janica said after the race. “Last year I didn’t qualify for the second run when I came back, so this is already better!”
“This hill has been good to me, I celebrated some great wins in the past. It’s a challenging slope when you used it twice on the same day”.
“Today I felt tired and at the end I didn’t have the power to push myself to my limits. The season-start requested much energy with so many races in all the events, the travels, the jet lag, Val d’Isère…”
“I can’t wait to get some rest to regain my momentum. When you compete in all four events it’s crucial to find the time to recover some strength between two weekends”.

This performance also reinforced Janica’s position in the Overall World Cup standings. She also kept the lead in the slalom World Cup but only with a few points advance on Paerson.
“Right now I have already more points after four weeks of racing than last winter at the end of the winter” she explained. “It’s maybe time to start to think about tactics” Janica added. “I already reached four times the podium so far in the World Cup tour – as often as during the entire last winter”.
“It’s important to keep this high level throughout the winter and in order not to be burned out, we may take some decision about my program in January if I achieve more good results in the coming weeks in Lenzerheide and Semmering”.
“In Lenzerheide, I’ll also compete in the downhill to score heavy points in the combined and hopefully things go well there and then in Austria. If I have a big gap at the beginning of next year, I may start to pick my races before the Worlds at St Moritz”.
“The idea is to collect as many points as possible in a minimum of races in January. It would be great to get some nice rest before St Moritz”.

Last season, Janica decided to skip the races in Are, Sweden, to better prepare the Olympics in Salt Lake City. “It’s important to be fresh when you go to these big races so I’ll pay a lot of attention to what I’ll be doing in the coming weeks. I have to make some choices because it’s really tough to race everything. I like the downhills but you also have to train two or three days, it takes time and energy from you, and you can’t always keep your level in the other specialties”.

As many other contenders in Sestriere, Janica was not really seduced by the new “K.O" format introduced in this race. “It’s too complicated in a way, too short also for me to really express myself” she said.
“Maybe it would be better to have three runs with the best times in two of them, I don’t know, but this is not the best for me”.

Janica and her parents are staying in Sestriere to attend the men’s slalom scheduled for Monday afternoon and evening then she will travel to Lenzerheide where the downhill training should start on Wednesday.
