KO Slalom, Sestriere (ITA), 14.12.2002.
Another quiet day for Janica Kostelic in Sestriere
Janica Kostelic easily qualified herself for the second round of the new “KO” slalom introduced for the first time this season on the World Cup Tour. The Croatian Superstar, a three-time winner here from in 1999 and 2000, set he fourth best time in the first run won by Switzerland’s Sonja Nef ahead of last year’s winner Anja Paerson from Sweden.

Laure Pequegnot, the defending slalom World Cup champion clocked the 3rd best time in that opening run in which Janica only lost 26/100 on the leader.
Only the thirty best skiers are qualified for the finals three runs which will take place Sunday – all the favorites in fact will compete. Nika Fleiss almost made the cut – she finished 32nd only 8/100 behind the 30th!

On Sunday, all skiers will compete twice on the same shorter run in group of two. Nef will try to knock out Austria’s Carina Raich, the 30th from today, Anja Paerson will ski against Hedda Berntsen from Norway and Janica against Germany’s Martina Ertl, 27th today.
15 skiers plus a lucky-loser will continue on the next round and then the last nine qualified will compete for the win on another run.

“We will see how good this new format is, for the moment we are pleased by Janica’s form” said Team Manager Vedran Pavlek after the race.
“The slope is demanding and this is good for Janica. She feels relaxed and she achieved a strong run. It’s important to be consistent throughout the day tomorrow and then charge in the last run. Janica likes to compete on this hill and she expects to do well until the end”.

A winner in slalom in Park City, Janica came in 2nd afterwards in Aspen behind Anja Paerson. The Swede will certainly be one of the top contenders here along others as Pequegnot who didn’t ski so well in North America.
This race should be quite interesting to watch.
