Satisfying 5th place for Janica Kostelic

Janica Kostelic reached a strong 5th place today in the first race in Val d'Isère, the giant slalom won by Italy's Karen Putzer ahead of Sonja Nef. She was already 5th in the first run and aiming for another spot on the podium, yet Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister and Alexandra Meissnitzer, two former winners here, passed her thanks to their very aggressive second run.

But the Croatian Superstar was quite satisfied with her result even if she once again missed the podium by only a few hundredths of a second.
"I didn't ski so well in the first run because I still felt tired and I was not focused enough in the middle part" she said after the race.
"I couldn't sleep in the past nights because of the jet-lag and I'm not as fresh as I want in the morning. In the second run, I skied better in the middle part but not good enough in the final gates where I should have fought back. Once more, I'm losing several places because of a few hundredths of a second as in Lake Louise".
"I'm happy to have done so well today after a full week of downhill training. It's not easy at all to ski all four events and score consistently top-10 places".
"I know that people expect a lot from me - mostly top-3 finishes - but ski racing is a tough sport and you have to fight hard to end among the top-10. I'm pleased by each top-10 result as long as I have the feeling to have done my best. I'm skiing for myself, not for anyone else".

"Karen Putzer had a great day, you can see how motivating a victory can be. After her success in Lake Louise, she took all risks today and she will for sure be hard to beat tomorrow in the Super-G".
"I'll try my best, I don't feel any pressure, Karen is the skier to beat in this event. With a solid run, I am hopeful of reaching the top-10 again. The season is very long and I prefer not to think that I have thirty more big races to come in the next four months. It will be important to remain fresh and motivated".
