Janica fifth in Val d’Isere
At the third giant slalom of the season, in val d’Isere, Janica Kostelic finished in a very good fifth place, 93 1/100 of a second behind race winner Karen Putzer. With those points Janica remains the leader of the World Cup, even if the second-placed Italian managed to decrease her point lead to 160 points.

Janica started as number nine, and finished the first run fifth, behing Putzer, Nef, Flemmen, and Obermoser.
- She lost speed in the upper part of the course. This course is definetly better for lighter skiers – said Ante Kostelic after the first run.
Janica merely added:
- Things are going to be tough in the second run – us first 20 skiers crammed ourselves into one second.
In the second run, the world’s premiere skier had 16. time, which was enough for her to keep the fifth position. And a mere five 1/100 of a second kept her away from the winner’s podiom.
- It’s always these 1/100 of a second... Well, this is good as well. I am content. In the first run, I skied the bottom part of the course better, and in the second one the upper. Had I managed to bring the two together... I know that only first places are expected of me, but I’m among the top ten in all four events, and that’s something that most of the other girls don’t even ski! Putzer? She was trully magnificient, I’ve never seen her in such form – said Janica.
- So what if Karen Putzer decreases the difference somewhat, that’s not essential, the main thing’s that Janica is healthy. – said the father, Ante.
Nika Fleiss and Ana Jelusic haven not qualified into the second run. Nika started 69. and finished 55, while Ana started penultimate, 71, and placed herself better, at 51.
On Friday, the girls will be racing in a super G race.
