Second season win for Marlies Schild
Less than a week after dominating the slalom at Lienz, the Austrian team was again the strongest in Sljeme above Zagreb where Marlies Schild became the "Snow Queen" in crushing her rivals in both runs. In front of a huge crowd of over twenty thousand enthusiastic spectators, Schild beat by 44/100 of a second her team-mate Kathrin Zettel while Janica Kostelic conquered an amazing 3rd place after losing her right pole at the beginning of her second run.

Another Austrian, Nicole Hosp was 4th while Anja Paerson, who only flew in at Zagreb last night because of transportation problems, was a distant 5th. She suffered a flue at home at Taernaby during her New Year break. Tanja Poutiainen, last year's winner was 6th ahead of USA's Kristine Koznick. Croatia's Nika Fleiss was 12th and Ana Jelusic 25th.

Marlies was happy!

Marlies Schild, who collected a check of 60,000.- EUR for her sixth World Cup victory, was extremely happy by her latest success. "It was such a wonderful race," she said at the Press Conference. "To ski down that course with such an audience which screams and cheers for us is quite exciting. The atmosphere here is quite unique. The feeling that we get from the people here is something special."

"I'm always so nervous when I stand in the start house, but then when I get going, I know exactly what I have to do. I was very confident. It wasn't a perfect run, but I skied well enough. I like the step part, and in the last five gates, I turned the turbo on and I went for it. That's my secret I guess."

"I'm in good form right now as we can see, and I hope to keep it until the Olympic Games in February. That's the big goal. I felt some pain in my back today in the second run. It was like something was blocked. I will have to find out what it happening pretty quickly if I want to continue like this."

Another podium for Kathrin Zettel.

Kathrin Zettel, 4th last week at Lienz, fought very hard in her quest for her first World Cup win. She missed it here but it's only a matter of time until her first triumph on the tour. Janica Kostelic considers her as one of the most promising
talents on the women's tour.

"I had fun to ski here and to finish the race for the first time," she said. "It's a great event, and I felt so good at this moment. The audience is amazing. It's completely different to ski down when you feel that so many people cheer for you".

"The course was in excellent shape, and in spite of all the snow that fell between the runs, the course workers made a great job in taking good care of the slope. The visibility was fine too."

"This podium means a lot to me, it's my best slalom result," Zettel added. "Everything looks to be so easy for me at the moment. Of course, I'm looking forwards to my first win, but I don't want to put too much pressure on myself for that goal. There is no way that I'll force myself to win. I like what I'm doing now and I want to have more fun."

"I'm really honoured by the nice comment Janica made about me in Lienz. I feel some pressure to confirm her prognostic, but I don't' want to change anything because of this. I love skiing, and I want to enjoy the rest of this season like I do now."

"The next race is in Maribor, a place that I like a lot. I made a junior gold medal there two years ago and above all, my 6th and 7th places there last year qualified me for the World Championships at Santa Caterina.

I have good memories. But the conditions there can be difficult for me if the snow is too soft so we'll have to see what I can do. It could be difficult for me to ski the flat parts."

This weekend Maribor will host the next women's competition on the Pohorje slope where a giant slalom and a slalom are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday.
