Promising 4th place for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic captured a promising 4th place in today’s giant slalom won by Spain’s Maria Jose Rienda Contreras – missing the podium by only half a second. It’s her best performance since her 2nd place in Soelden – and a good reason to increase her confidence before Sunday’s slalom she won last year. She clocked one of the fastest times in the second run, losing only 7/100 of a second on Anja Paerson who came in 2nd.

“I'm quite happy with this 4th place today in giant slalom, I’m close to the podium which is always a good thing. I’m pretty much in the same mental attitude today as in the other race days. Yesterday after the Super-G, I was really furious – not pleased at all by my race. So I went up to train some GS...It was nice, I was pleased to see that my skiing was excellent, and there was nothing to say about it.”

“But I could not repeat that kind of skiing afterwards on race day. It's really a pity that I wasn't able to ski the same way during the competition. Maybe what I’m missing the most when I race is that I'm not angry enough to ski at my limits. I know that I'm too cautious, and that I ski with a margin, but I guess that it’s only a matter of time until it will be fine again.”

“I'll need some weeks to put together what I need to and I think that in February, I should be ready. That's what we always do. And it worked pretty much so far. I know that I'll find my rhythm when I need to. I can’t push too hard now, because I could be really tired for the Olympics. That's not the tactic we want to do.”

“The race today was really exciting, and I like to ski here. It’s a challenging course, one of the nicest on the tour. I can’t wait to go up and train slalom. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's race. It will be demanding and technical. The most important for me is to have fun in what I’m doing.”

“I'm very happy to go back to Val d'Isère. I like to race the speed events over there. I was really disappointed last year, when everything was cancelled. I'm sure that this could be a great place for me to show how I feel in Super-G and downhill.”

If the conditions remain difficult for Sunday’s slalom, Janica should be able to reach another podium this winter and find back part of her momentum before travelling back to Europe at the beginning of next week.
