11th place for Janica Kostelic in Are's giant slalom
After reaching an excellent 4th place in Saturday's Super-G, Janica Kostelic had to be content with a more modest 11th place the next day in the giant slalom won by Spain's Marie-Jose Rienda-Contreras.

Anja Paerson came in 3rd which helped her to regain the lead in the Overall World Cup standings with an advance of 8 points on the skier from Zagreb, while Finland's Tanja Poutiainen, who fell -for the first time this season - in the opening run, is now 3rd with a delay of 44 points on Janica.

Austria's Renate Goetschl, an excellent 6th in that giant slalom after finishing a far 10th in the Super-G, moved up to 4th place in the Overall standings a few points ahead of her teammate Michaela Dorfmeister.

The remaining World Cup program, which includes four speed events, a slalom, a giant slalom and a combined, could be favourable for Goetschl, the Overall World Cup champion in the year 2000, if she finds back soon all her momentum. Next week's new Super-combined in Sansicario should be crucial for the final victory.

Janica, who seems to be more relaxed nowadays in the speed events, never found her best rhythm in this last giant slalom race prior to the Finals in Switzerland's Lenzerheide in three weeks.

”I'm not this kind of racer who is able to be aggressive when I don't feel it, I couldn't push as hard as I needed to," the triple World Champion from Santa Caterina said after the race.

"I can't get out of my mind the fact that I didn't finish a giant slalom in St Moritz when I was attacking, and also two years ago in Bormio. I prefer to be more cautious and make my run the way I feel it. I wanted to have a good race, but in the back of my head, I have this apprehension in me."

"In the first leg, I wasn't quick, and my skiing wasn't fluid. It doesn't mean that I didn't ski well."

"The setting was quite an advantage for the speed specialists. It's a very quick giant slalom. The organisers shortened the course, because this morning, the weather conditions were uncertain. It was quite foggy, and the visibility could have become a problem."

"In the second run, the setting was different. You kept turning all the time. You had to make the difference in the first gates. The rhythm was pretty sustained, and as it's natural snow, the course was soon damaged."

"In the second part, there were less angles, so it wasn't so much the case. You didn't have to work so much with your skis, which means that you didn't loose time to recuperate."

"In the last part, the gates were quite regular, but at that time everything was already over for me."

"At the beginning of my race, it was strange, I wasn't making too many mistakes, maybe in the first part where the course was quite rough, but I didn't push or take any risks."

"Everyone has his own way handling the race. I'm 11th today, but at least, I score some points. All the races are important, and I'm really looking forwards to Sansicario next week."

"But for sure, everything will only be decided at Lenzerheide. It will be exciting there. There are still several skiers who fight for the Overall victory. It's good - it makes everything more interesting. I didn't expect to belong to the group of favourites at that stage of the season, so I don't feel any pressure. I have done so well at the Worlds that I can be more relaxed."
