Janica Kostelic was tired in Santa Caterina
After achieving two great performances in downhill, Janica Kostelic had to be content with a far 22nd place today in Santa Caterina on the demanding giant slalom race set on the lower part of the "Deborah Compagnoni" course.

The reigning Olympic champion, who lost over two second on the leader Tina Maze in the first run, finished at 3,03 seconds behind her at the end of the second run.

None of the other top-favourites of the Overall World Cup standings reached the podium in that unusual race: Tanja Poutiainen was 6th ex aequo with Anja Paerson. Janica remained in 2nd place in the Overall standings, 53 points behind Poutiainen and 34 points ahead of Paerson.

The champion from Zagreb was obviously tired before the first run after spending much energy on the downhill run during the past three days. "I knew I was going down slowly while skiing that first run but I don't really understand why," she said afterwards. "I felt quite tired but I thought I could handle it as in the past but apparently I was more tired than I thought. It was a terrible first run!"

"In fact, the day started badly - I almost crashed during my warm-up and I didn't feel so good. But I think it will be better tomorrow for the slalom."

Janica may also have had some problems with the visibility since most of the run was in the shadow. She skied well in the parts situated in the sun. Yet she didn't give too much importance to the World Cup points she lost during that day. "I don't think too hard about the Overall World Cup. Don't forget that this is my comeback season and I mostly want to remain healthy and relaxed and then to ski as well as possible. Of course, when you are among the best three at the middle of the season, you know you have a good chance to fight for the Cup until the end of the winter. We will see how I will handle the races in Cortina d'Ampezzo."

In Sunday's slalom, she will aim to get back on the podium as Poutiainen, Paerson and Marlies Schild who didn't finish her second run.
