Janica Kostelic 5th in Semmering's GS
Janica Kostelic landed a strong 5th place in today's giant slalom race hold in Austria's Semmering by difficult weather and courses conditions.

The triple Olympic Champion, a two-time winner here in slalom and 2nd in giant slalom two years ago, lost 2,08 seconds after two controlled runs on Austria's Marlies Schild who celebrated her first victory in a World Cup giant slalom.

Finland's Tanja Poutiainen was a solid 2nd and reached her sixth podium of the season while Sweden's Anja Paerson crashed in the second run after straddling a gate with her right pole.

Janica, who had a bad crash in St Moritz last week while trying once more to win her first World Cup giant slalom, came 1/100 of a second ahead of Spain's Maria Jose Rienda-Contreras, twice 3rd this winter. Slovenia's Tina Maze, the recent winner in St Moritz, was a far 23rd after making a major mistake at the end of the second run. She clocked the fourth best time in the first leg.

Poutiainen regained the lead in the Overall and the GS World Cup standings with 566 points, 73 more than Paerson and 123 more than Kostelic. The skier from Zagreb, who trained in Sljeme after Christmas, didn't seem to take a maximum of risks in that fourth giant slalom race. The organizers worked hard to prepare as well as possible the slope after some rain showers and intense snowfalls during the past three days. Yet the course was quite rough in the afternoon and fog covered the middle of the slope for most skiers.

On Wednesday, Janica will try to win her third consecutive slalom in Semmering and reinforce her position at the top of the World Cup rankings.

So far, she was 1st in Aspen and 3rd in Altenmarkt.
