Bad luck for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic missed a great chance to reach another podium in today’s giant slalom raced on the demanding Engiadina course in St Moritz. The skier from Zagreb, who clinched two gold medals here in February 2003, crashed in the lower part of her second run after clocking one of the fastest intermediate times.

She was half a second faster than Spain’s Maria–Jose Rienda Contreras who came in 3rd when she lost her balance at the end of a turn and tumbled several times over herself.

In the first run, she clocked the 3rd best time, only a few tenths of a second behind Anja Paerson and Tina Mazè who eventually won that competition. Fortunately, she didn’t hurt herself seriously during her fall.

“She suffers some bruises and she needed some time to recover from her spill, but she should be fine in a few days,” explained the ski team manager Vedran Pavlek. “She was going strong and she had a good chance to challenge the other favourites.”

It’s not the first time that Janica failed to finish a giant slalom that she could win. Two years ago, she crashed in Bormio at the end of her second run after clocking an impressive new best intermediate time.

It was already amazing that Janica was able to compete and ski so well today in the first run. She woke-up with strong pains at her stomach and she received some treatment from the local health service between the two runs. “She certainly suffers a virus and she was trembling at the start, I don’t know how she could ski so fast, she is amazing,” said her father Ante after the first run.

Janica has some time to find back some energy before the coming races planned next week in Semmering, where a giant slalom and a slalom are scheduled.

In the Overall World Cup standings, Paerson regained the lead after this competition. The Swede has an advance of 7 points on Tanja Poutianen and 95 on Janica before the next event.
