Janica finished 16th
Janica Kostelic who achieved a series of strong performances in recent speed events in Lake Louise and Altenmarkt was aiming for another great race on the Engiadina run on which she won two gold medals in 2003 and suffered a terrible crash in 1999 after In fact, she clocked a very fast intermediate time at the top of the course before making a huge mistake at a jump.

Yet she lost over a second on the winner, Germany’s Hilde Gerg and finished at a far 16th place. It’s the first time since the season start that the triple Olympic champion doesn’t enter the top-15.

Anja Paerson was 13th not good enough to regain the lead in the Overall standings even if Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen, who suffers from her back, skipped that race to rest and get back in shape. She hopes to compete in Wednesday’s giant slalom. Janica Kostelic is still 3rd – 43 points behind her.

“I did a stupid mistake at that turn, I was thinking about how I’ll handle the coming jump and then I made this error which cost me much time,” she said after her run without losing her sense of humour. “It was a great day for having a race, the conditions were perfect and I was looking for a good race today.”

Janica, who was quite disappointed that the two races in Val d’Isère were cancelled after skiing very well in training, will have to be patient before taking part in her next speed event. It’s not sure yet when and where the two races from Val d’Isère will be postponed, eventually in February, after the Worlds in Bormio. “I like downhill and Super-G much more than slalom, so it’s too bad that we don’t have more downhill on our schedule until the races in Cortina d’Ampezzo in three weeks.”

In tomorrow’s giant slalom, Janica will fight for another podium with Poutiainen and Paerson in that last World Cup race prior the Christmas break.
