Superb 5th place for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic keeps on surprising and impressing the women’s World Cup tour. More than six hundred days after her last Super-G race in Kvitfjell during the 2003 World Cup finals, the Croatian ace scored a superb 5th place in Lake Louise, her best result in the Canadian event. She was 6th here five years ago.

She only lost 57/100 of a second on the winner, Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister and 17/100 on USA’s Lindsey Kildow, who reached her third consecutive podium in three days in taking 3rd place. The weather was again not too good.

It’s the third time in her career that she came in 5th in a World Cup Super-G. She was also twice 2nd, once on Snowbasin during the 2002 Olympics and in Aspen, Colorado, in November 2002. She was on her best way to win in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in March 2002 when she crashed out at the middle of the course. It’s only one of her few failures to end a race in recent years.

Janica, who kept on improving during this Canadian stop, was pleased by her result even if she felt that more was possible today.
“I made a mistake at the fifth gate which cost some time and later on at the beginning of the steep part where I was sort of surprised by the line,” she said after the race. “I was not aggressive enough in that part.”

“But this is fine because I’m finding back some good feeling speed. It was a good week for me here. I think the entire North American races went on fine with me basically. I know I’m back and that things will keep on improving.”

Vedran Pavlek too was more than satisfied by the last two weeks. “What Janica has done in the part races was quite sensational,” he said. “She did much better than she and we expected. It’s an excellent start and I hope she will do better as long as she remains healthy.”

Anja Paerson, who finished 12th, is now 29 points behind Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen in the Overall Standings. Janica is only 28 points behind her Swedish rival. She may have a chance to get closer to her next weekend in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee where a Super-G and a slalom are scheduled. The following week, two downhills will take place in Val d’Isère.
