Janica 13th!
Janica Kostelic reached a solid 13th place in Lake Louise at the end of the first of two downhills held in difficult weather conditions on the “Olympic Run” which had to be shortened because of gusts of winds and snowfalls.

The triple Olympic champion, who finished twice among the top-10 in this race in past years, only lost 1,33 seconds on America’s Lindsey Kildow, who won her first World Cup race. She was 15/100 of a second ahead of Sweden ’s Anja Paerson who moved up in the overall standings. She is now only 65 points behind Finland ’s Tanja Poutiainen, who didn’t race in Canada.

Janica is 3rd with a delay of 63 points on the 2004 Overall Champion. The skier from Zagreb was pleased by her performance – especially considering the fact that she only skied once in downhill since March 2003 and her last downhill race in Innsbruck , 21 months ago!

“I had a good race even if I made some mistakes at the top, it was really nice to get back on my downhill skis,” she said after her race. “I did well at the bottom and this top-15 in encouraging.”

“I have been looking for this for a long time. I just like this event and I take these races as kind of intense training for the coming speed events.”

“I really like to be here and these courses are not to difficult. The weather was not so nice today, but the race was fair. There was not too much wind for us.”

“I still need to practise in this event before being able to take more risks.”

Interestingly enough, it’s not the first time that Janica is skiing well by difficult weather conditions. In December 2002, she was an excellent 6th in Lenzerheide, only a few hundredths behind the winner Michaela Dorfmeister.

Last week, she also excelled in Aspen by bad weather. Apparently, her instinct and her great feeling for the snow strongly help her to cruise smoothly down the slope while some of her rivals seem tenser.

If the weather improves in the coming days, she should be able to reach the top-10 in the other downhill and in the Super-G on Sunday.

Sooner or later, Janica will also fight for a spot on the podium in downhill after having finished 2nd in a World Cup Super-G two years ago in Aspen . It’s an important goal in her career alongside a win in a World Cup giant slalom.
