Kostelic in the lead
Wearing the red leader’s bib of the slalom World Cup standings, Janica Kostelic crushed again all her rivals in the first run of the second slalom organized this weekend in Aspen. After a remarkably smooth and controlled run down he treacherous slalom course, she clocked the best time with an advance of 44/100 on Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen and 76/100 on Veronika Zuzulova from Slovakia.
Many favourites struggled on their way down the tough course and the heavy snowfall including Sweden’s Anja Paerson and Austria’s Marlies Schild and Nicole Hops who all skied out.

Two other Croatian skiers also excelled on that formidable Ruthie’s Run - Nika Fleiss was a strong 7th and Ana Jelusic a surprising 11th.

Janica Kostelic was more astonished by the aggressive tactic from her rivals than by her own performance.

"I just came down smoothly without trying to hard, there was no need to attack this course as hard as most other racers did." she said afterwards.

"I observed them from the departure and I was quite surprised to see how hard they attacked right from the top. This was stupid and useless. It was more important to look for a clean run and make it until the finish line. I also carefully checked the course this morning during my inspection. A lot of top-athletes didn’t pay attention to the tricky drops and to all the ruts situated in the first part of the slope. In fact, many of them skied out there because they were only looking for speed instead of using the terrain."

"The conditions were again very demanding, but I’m used to ski also when the weather is bad. I just like skiing all the time when I can. Ski racing is an outdoor sport so you have to be used to all kinds of weathers."

The triple Olympic Champion, who already won four World Cup races in the US, should be able to celebrate her fifth triumph today considering the race conditions and her advance on the rest of the field.
Tanja Poutiainen, who wore for the third consecutive day bib 1, may not take all risks this afternoon in order to take over the lead in the Overall World Cup standings. She should be able to reach her fourth podium in four races.
