Janica finished 2nd in the 1st slalom run
After impressing the World Cup tour with her superb 3rd place in yesterday’s giant slalom, Janica Kostelic confirmed her strong form in clocking the 2nd fastest time in the first slalom run. The double Overall World Cup champion only lost 5/100 of a second on Friday’s winner, Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen while Sweden’s Anja Paerson, the defending Overall World Cup champion was 3rd with a delay of 67/100 on the leader. Austria’s Nicole Hosp was 4th at 71/100 while the two other Croatian athletes, Ana Jelusic and Nika Fleiss ended 17th and 21st. It’s the first time ever that three Croatian skiers qualify for a second slalom run on the World Cup Tour.

Janica, who has not raced a World Cup slalom since the 2003 Finals in Lillehammer, more than six hundred days ago, was again very surprised by her great achievement. “I don’t remember skiing so badly in slalom, how can I only lose a few hundredths,” she said with amazement. “The course was really rough and I had a hard time finding my rhythm. This is again crazy.”

Kostelic, who wore bib 3, was very fast on the bottom of the course where she made-up much time on Poutiainen, who won the slalom on home turf in Levi last season. Janica added that she is not thinking so much about winning but more about achieving another strong run in order to check her form.

“She needs some time before finding back her best rhythm and her routine,” explained her father Ante. “She skied fine in training but racing is something different. We are very happy how fast she is progressing but we don’t expect her to win now. The most important is to stay healthy and to take part in many races in the coming weeks. It will help her to build up her momentum.”

Janica has not won a World Cup slalom since Are, in February 2003.
