3rd Giant Slalom podium for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic reached her first podium of the season in Aspen’s demanding Giant Slalom race won by Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen who celebrated her first victory in that specialty in beating by 9/100 of a second Sweden’s Anja Paerson. Janica was 3rd at 15/100 – it’s the third GS World Cup podium for the skier from Zagreb who clearly dominated the first run in which she beat Poutiainen by 60/100. She was still leading the race by 31/100 at the intermediate time of the second run yet she lost part of her momentum as she approached the final part. It’s Janica’s fourth consecutive podium on that hill. She won the slalom here back in November 2000 and she was twice 2nd in Super-G and slalom in November 2002.

“I felt fine, I was not too tired but just a little more cautious,” she explained afterwards. “I didn’t want to crash as badly as I did so often in GS when I tried too hard to win. I was thinking about my tough crash in Bormio from two years ago and I didn’t ski as aggressively at the end of the second run to avoid a similar incident,” Janica added.

“I’m pleased by this result; I didn’t expect something special from today’s race so I was able to be quite relaxed on course. The conditions were fine in the afternoon. The visibility had improved and it was really nice to ski that hill today. It’s a very nice GS course and I’m looking forward for another nice day tomorrow in slalom. I feel quite comfortable in slalom which has been for years my best event.”

“I have more fun racing the speed events which are technically easier, but slalom is just my best event. I was 2nd in a Nor-Am race recently so I know that my slalom form is good too.”

“I’m very happy with my season start so far but I don’t put any pressure on me to win as soon as possible another race. There are still lots of races ahead and it’s more important to find back my best rhythm and stay healthy.”

“There is much competition on the women’s tour in the technical events but none of us thinks about the Overall World Cup for the moment. For me, it’s just another comeback – nothing really special. I’m now used to this kind of situation. My thyroid problem is under control and my knees are hurting as usual – it will be so for the rest of my life I guess.”

“The slalom should be quite demanding too. The snow is harder than two years ago when I came in 2nd. It should be fun. I’m aiming for a smooth race. If things go well, I may reach another good result, yet I would also be pleased with a 10th place – it’s not big deal. The most important is to be back on skis and enjoy it.”
