Janica Kostelic achieved quite an amazing performance this morning in Aspen, Colorado, in clocking the fastest time in the giant slalom raced by very difficult weather and course conditions.

It was snowing hard on the course when the skiers came down the demanding Ruthies run and the visibility was quite difficult too.

The triple Olympic Champion, who never won a World Cup giant slalom, beat by 60/100 of a second Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen while Sweden’s Anja Paerson, the great favourite before the race, is 3rd with a delay of 92/100.

It’s also the first time in her career that Janica, 2nd in Semmering and 3rd in Park City a few years ago, leads a first run in a World Cup GS.

“This is incredible, I can’t understand how I did this,” said a smiling and astonished Janica Kostelic after her run.

“On my way down, I didn’t feel so comfortable; I thought I was skiing poorly which at the end was good because I kept pushing myself,” she added.

“I didn’t expect such a result today, I think that the challenging course perfectly suited my style. The run was not too fast and technically demanding, which is better for me.”

“It’s a great feeling to be leading that run, but the race is far from being over. I don’t know how I’ll feel this afternoon, I may be tired and the skiers behind me are capable to ski very fast. A second is not too much for Anja Paerson in giant slalom.”

Ante Kostelic was quite impressed too. “This is fantastic,” he said while shaking his head. “Janica is incredible. You know, this comeback is more difficult than the other ones because she was out of racing for more than a year. It’s also quite difficult to control her thyroid problem. So we are really happy.”

Marica, Janica’s mother was very emotional too. She jumped up and down on while watching her daughter’s run from the finish area.

Results:
1. Janica Kostelic (CRO) 1:05.92
2. Tanja Poutiainen (FIN) 1:06.57
3. Anja Paerson (SWE) 1:06.86
