Janica Kostelic fought back
Ski World Cup. Janica Kostelic set the fastest time in the first slalom run in Sweden’s Are in the last women’s competition prior to the Finals in Lillehammer, Norway, next week. The Croatian, who is assured to win her second overall World Cup title in a week, beat by 55/100 of a second Sweden’s Anja Paerson, the winner here in a giant slalom last Friday night. Monika Bergmann from Germany was 3rd at 88/100 of a second.

Austria’s bronze medal winner Nicole Hosp, who suffered a bad crash in the giant slalom, didn’t take part in that race yet it’s not sure if she will also skip the Finals in Norway.

A winner in four slaloms this season, Janica was beaten in the last gate event in Maribor by Anja Paerson, the 2001 slalom World Champion, who aimed for a second consecutive victory here in Are. Yet Kostelic, who never reached a podium in that Swedish “Classic”, strongly wants to confirm her recent triumph in St Moritz where Anja only finished 4th in the World Championships slalom after a series of mistakes in the first run.

Both champions, who dominated all the slaloms this winter, are by far the best specialists in the technical events in the last three seasons. Paerson won a total of seven slaloms in the last two seasons and Janica thirteen since November 2000. She never skied out in slalom since her debuts on the World Cup tour back in January 1998!
