Super-G, Innsbruck (AUT), 02.03.2003.
Janica almost did it!
In reaching a solid 8th place in today’s last Super-G race prior the Finals in Lillehammer, Janica Kostelic is assured to collect her second overall World Cup title in Norway in two weeks. She only lost 41/100 on the winner, missing by only 15/100 her second Super-G podium this season after a smooth run down the “Patscherkofel” course. With the same determination than in Bormio’s giant slalom or in Salt Lake City, she could have fought for her first victory in that specialty!

None of her main rivals, Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister or Italy’s Karen Putzer, scored “heavy points” in that third speed event in Innsbruck run by warm temperatures. Dorfmeister was 6th and Putzer 10th.
Another Austrian, Brigitte Obermoser, won her first race of the season as she beat by a few tenths of a second France’s Carole Montillet, the favorite for the Super-G Cup. Renate Goetschl was 3rd!

In the overall standings updated after this competition, Janica leads now by 525 points over Dorfmeister while Putzer is 3rd at 565 points. These are the last two athletes who have a theoretical chance to catch her - yet only by winning most of the last six races while Janica should not score a single point. This situation is not imaginable so the triple Olympic Champion is on her way for another great triumph in this prestigious event.
It’s probably in Are that she will again celebrate this important moment – two years after her first success from March 2001!

“I did a good race, it was fine for me because the visibility was nice and the run interesting” she said. “I really enjoyed to cruise smoothly in these conditions, there was no pressure and I didn’t need to push myself to ski fast enough for a good result. I didn’t make a major mistake. I perfectly achieved the goal that I set to myself coming here – to amass a maximum of points without taking extra risks”.
“It was quite warm today and my boots were as stiff as usual. It was a strange feeling and was I careful at the big jump, but beside this I had no problem”.

Janica, who has taken part in all the World Cup races this winter, hopes to have saved enough energy for more good results in Scandinavia.
“I don’t know how I’ll ski in Are where the courses are not so challenging” she said. “In fact I didn’t score a podium there in the past. But the best way for me to approach these races is not to expect anything special from myself. I have only one important goal left – to win another World Cup title!”
