More points for Janica Kostelic in Innsbruck
With another good 12th place reached in the last downhill race before the Finals in Norway, Janica Kostelic consolidated her lead in the overall World Cup standings. She finished a second and a half behind Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister, but a few tenths ahead of Italy’s Karen Putzer. This allowed the skier from Zagreb to look with optimism towards the end of the season and the last competitions in Lillehammer. Janica, who started in 29th position after having clocked the second best time in training on Thursday, skied with enough control to make sure to reach the finish line without great problems.

In celebrating her second downhill victory of the season, Dorfmeister got closer to her in the standings but the margin which separated both World Champions is still quite important. Step after step, Janica is getting closer to her season’s main goal – another triumph in the overall World Cup standings.

“There are still some races to come, but I believe that the things are getting in a good way” she said after the race. “I think that I’ll have enough points to remain out of reach in Scandinavia”.

“The weather was just OK today, not as sunny as I expected. It’s very important for me to have nice weather conditions and ski with a good visibility. When it’s a race like Lenzerheide, I can still deal with it, but when it’s flat light like here, and bumpy too, I just don’t want to try hard and take risks”.

“I’m finishing 12th in the downhill which is fine. This year my goal was to improve my level in downhill, to reach some top-10 or top-15, which is the case with a 6th, a 9th ,a 10th and this 12th places. That’s another objective that I achieved this winter”. “The next one is to win once a downhill...But I don’t think that it will be for right now! If I would be racing better, I would also make some tactical choices with the bib numbers during the last training run. But it’s not necessary for the moment”.

“You have to give time to time. The problem is that I don’t have enough feeling in downhill, like I don’t know - when I’m gliding - if I’m fast or not”.
“I will improve with more races. I’ll ski better and finally get that feeling. It’s just a matter of experience and getting smarter. I have enough time for this”.

In Sunday’s Super-G, Janica will keep the same attitude and go for another clean and safe run. Yet this tactic could help her to end again among the leaders. On Friday, only a mistake before the gliding section prevented her to finish among the top-10! On her side, Dorfmeister and Putzer have to take more risks to defend their chance to win the Super-G World Cup standings. So they can also make mistakes!

Next week, Janica will travel to Are, where she didn’t return since her triumph in March 2001. Last winter, she skipped the Swedish races to rest and relax in Selce before flying to Salt Lake City. Are is one of the few “Classics” on the women’s tour where she didn’t reach a podium so far in slalom. Then it’s time to move on to Lillehammer where she has not competed so far.
