Janica back on (fast) tracks
Janica Kostelic was close the reach another strong top-10 finish in a Super-G in Innsbruck. The double World Champion from St Moritz ended in 15th position in the first of two Super-G races won by her good friend Renate Goetschl ahead of France’s Carole Montillet.

The skier from Zagreb shared her 15th place with Italy’s Karen Putzer, which allowed her to keep a strong lead in the overall World Cup standings after this race. Michaela Dorfmeister, only 4th in that first race since St Moritz, is still in 4th place in the overall standings a few points behind Sweden’s Anja Paerson, 3rd. If Janica’s lead passes six hundred points after this weekend in Innsbruck, she would be mathematically assured to clinch her second big Crystal Cup even before flying to Are! Such a performance is not impossible considering her good form which permitted her to cruise quite fast down the “Patscherkofel” run famous since the 1976 Winter Olympics.

In the upper part, Janica clocked a fast intermediate time and she was on her way for a top-10 finish when she made a mistake before a gliding section. At that point, she was in the times of Austria’s Brigitte Obermoser who ended the competition in 6th place!

Yet the triple Olympic Champion was satisfied the same by her result which reinforced her lead in the World Cup standings. “My goal this weekend is to score as many points as possible and keep a strong lead in the general classification” she said after the race.
“I was not thinking too much about a specific result today, just to ski as well as possible. My knee is OK and I should be able to finish the season normally”.

“It’s my first race here and I was glad that the weather conditions were fine today. Everything is easier when the sun is shining! It was quite windy the past days. I feel comfortable on this course and I’m looking forward for a solid downhill tomorrow”.

On Thursday, Janica clocked a promising 2nd best time in the last downhill training dominated by Germany’s Regina Haeusl. She confirmed after this first Super-G that she will compete as planned in the downhill, hoping to amass more World Cup points.

This season, the superstar from Croatia reached three times the top-10 in downhill, including an impressive 6th place in Lenzerheide despite difficult weather conditions. In total, Janica should score over four hundred points this season in the speed event. In Super-G she is actually 5th, only 37 points behind Karen Putzer, presently 3rd. No doubt that she should be fighting for more podiums in downhill and Super-G races in a near future.
Another smooth run in Saturday’s downhill should allow her to end again among the top-10.
