More pain for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic showed again great courage during her giant slalom race which she ended in 13th position, three seconds behind Sweden’s Anja Paerson, who wins her second gold medal since 2001.

The combined World Champion skied well in the first run despite her strong pain at her knee and she clocked a promising 11th best time, not too far from the leaders. She was having a strong second run when she straddled a gate with her right arm after setting a new best intermediate time.
The pole of that gate hit her violently back at her right shoulder. Nevertheless Janica was able to end her run yet she lost much time on the leaders.

She suffered also from her right hand and a strong bruise at the back of her shoulder. Further examinations done in a clinic in St Moritz didn’t show a fracture so that the skier from Zagreb is expected to compete in the slalom on Saturday.

“I had a good second run, I felt comfortable and fast” she said afterwards. “I think I had a good chance for a top-5 place without this incident. But the essential is that I’ll be able to compete on Saturday in the slalom”.
“I was pleased to race today, the conditions were excellent and my knee didn’t bother me more than in the past days. My GS skiing was fine too.
I have enough time to recover and be ready for the slalom”.

Janica should feel relaxed before her last race here – she shares the position of top-favorite now with Anja Paerson, winner in three slaloms this season and new giant slalom World Champion. Earlier next week, more examinations are planned in Zagreb on Janica’s painful knee. “We will see how it looks” explained Vedran Pavlek, the team manager. “Janica hopes to be able to compete in more races until the Finals in Lillehammer, eventually in slalom. We will know more about her health in a few days and then we will see”.
