Janica Kostelic fights for another gold medal in the combined
Janica Kostelic remains a strong favorite for the combined world title after the downhill part in which she clocked the 12th fastest time, 67/100 behind the leader, Janette Hargin from Sweden. Another Swede, Jessica Lindell-Vikarby, 4th in the downhill in Lenzerheide, was 2nd ahead of Nicole Hosp, one of most promising talent of the Austrian team. None of the two Scandinavian racers ever scored good results in slalom on the World Cup tour.

Christine Sponring, the silver medal winner in combined in St Anton, was also very fast. She set the 5th best time. Germany’s Martina Ertl, the defending combined champion, finished a far and disappointing 24th, over two seconds behind the leader.

With two normal slalom runs, Janica should be able to regain the lost time on her Austrian rivals which she mostly dominated in past slalom races. Yet, the triple Olympic champion feels again strong pain at her right knee injured here in December 1999. “She injured herself during some condition training ten days ago and the pain became stronger today after a jump when her two skis hit each other” explained Vedran Pavlek, the team manager, after the race. “We hope she can resist the pain this afternoon”.

Zeljko Sucur, the team doctor, gave some pain killer to Janica before the first slalom run and he expects her to be able to ski normally this afternoon.

Also well placed for a spot on the podium, USA’s Caroline Lalive, 13th with a delay of 23/100 on Janica Kostelic. Marlies Schild, another strong slalom specialist lost already a second on the skier from Zagreb.

The first slalom run begins this afternoon at 1.PM (MET) and the second run at 3.PM (MET)
