Janica Kostelic smiles again
Janica Kostelic had a nice smile on her face as she left the finish area after the last downhill training run on Friday which took place by nice weather conditions. The triple Olympic Champion clocked a promising 7th place in that trial in which she only lost half a second on Germany’s Hilde Gerg. She finished just behind Austria’s Christine Sponring, the silver medal winner in combined at St Anton. Germany’s Martina Ertl, the defending combined champion from 2001 didn’t take part in this last timed practice run to train some giant slalom.

“I had a nice run today, the conditions were excellent for fast skiing” she said after her run. “The snow is pretty slow so there is no problem for me to handle the jumps this year. The course is quite different than in 1999” Janica added. “I won’t compete in the downhill on Sunday to train some slalom. I feel fine, my knee is not hurting more than usual”.

On Thursday, Janica trained some giant slalom with the Austrian team and apparently she achieved some solid runs. After finishing 2nd in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the skier from Zagreb struggled in Maribor where she suffered from nausea over the week-end.
Here in St Moritz, she lives a more relaxed life with her parents in the house rented by the team. Ivica will joint them in the coming days.
The most important for her beside her health is to compete by fair weather. It has been cold, cloudy and snowing in the past days, but the weather forecast is positive for the last week here.

A good result in the combined would be important for Janica who was not lucky in 2001 at St Anton. After a strong combined downhill, she crashed in the combined slalom – her only DNF in slalom since her debuts on the World Cup tour in 1998. In the special slalom won by Anja Paerson, she was 5th. Her fans at home expect a lot from her in St Moritz after the great Olympics in Salt Lake City.
