Super-G, St. Moritz (SUI), 03.02.2003.
19th place for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic was one of many favorites who had a hard time to reach her potential in the women’s Super-G set on the demanding Engiadina course.
While Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister, who only reached one podium this season in the specialty, clinched her second gold medal in a speed event, leaders as France’s Carole Montillet, Austria’s Renate Goetschl or Italy’s Karen Putzer finished way behind the podium in that first women’s race of the World Championships. The wind certainly influenced the issue of this competition!

It’s the first time that Janica competed again in a speed event in St Moritz where she suffered a bad crash in December 1999. Yet she said she had no problems handling her return here.
Her 19th place, almost two seconds behind the winner, didn’t affect her mood. Janica was not angry or disappointed even if this is one her worst results this winter. Her goal was obvously to make a safe run down the slope and stay healthy until her main events – the combined and the technical races.

“I’m finishing 19th in today Super-G, but what a big deal!” she said with a smile. “There are some days with and others days without. I think that this is the only explanation I can give. I was feeling like the other day in the giant slalom in Maribor. I don’t really know what happened today”.
“ It’s not because I won a silver medal in Salt Lake City in the last Olympics games, that I have to be disappointed with my rankings today. You can’t always be in the top, especially when you are racing all events like I do”.
“ The conditions were not totally fair today, some had hard wind, and others not, so this can make a huge difference in racing. Looking at the favorites who started late, I can imagine that the weather conditions changed. I think that if Michaela Dorfmeister had the wind in the back, and carole Montillet in the face, they were not having the same chance to be on te podium. But that’s skiing!”
“ I didn’t make any special mistakes, I skied normally. That’s maybe the problem, when I make mystakes it’s when I’m really skiing aggressively, attacking and racing hard”.
”I don’t expect anything special about those Worlds, I didn’t set myself any goals, as I usually do”.
“As I already said, my objectives this season are to win the overall World Cup, and of course the slalom World Cup, that I already got in Maribor last week. When I’ll be finished with that, I can concentrate on something else!”

Janica will have some time to relax now. Her next races will take place in a week – the combined races. She doesn’t plan to compete in the downhill planned for Sunday.
