Another podium for Janica Kostelic
Janica Kostelic achieved another impressive performance today in the last women’s slalom prior the World Championships in St Moritz in reaching a strong 2nd place behind Sweden’s Anja Paerson despite annoying health problems. She suffered from a stomach ache all Sunday.

The triple Olympic Champion, unbeaten in slalom since Christmas, lost the race by only 18/100 of a second. Yet the skier from Zagreb, a far 17th in giant slalom on Saturday, scored enough points in the slalom World Cup standings to be sure to receive the small Crystal Cup next march in Lillehammer where she should meet her brother Ivica, 4th in Kitzbhel, on the podium. Only two more women’s slalom races are scheduled this season – one in Are, Sweden, the other during the Finals in Norway.

After her first run, Kostelic vomited in the finish area and received treatment from her team between runs. It’s not sure yet if the World Cup leader suffers from a virus as last fall, or from a flew as her team manager Vedran Pavlek. In these conditions, her achievement today was quite impressive.
“I really felt bad, like last year prior the Olympics, and I would have pulled out of the race if not for the numerous ski fans who came here” she said after her race.
“I didn’t sleep at all last night and I was quite passive in the first run. I was astonished to have clocked such a good time this morning. In the second run, I tried again very hard but I was also thinking a lot about the rest that I will take this week. I first go back to Zagreb then to Selce at the sea shore where I will meet Ivica. We had a nice time there last week and it should help me to recover some energy and my health”.
“I’ll need to be in good shape in St Moritz to compete in all events against good skiers as Anja Paerson who is very strong in this moment”.
“It’s good to have reached the podium today because I’m sure to get the slalom Cup now. It was one of my main goals this winter. I also increased my lead in the Overall World Cup”.
“I feel sorry about what happen to some skiers here because some spectators misbehaved along the course. The racers are all good friends and I go along well with Anja and the other leaders. In fact we remained a lot together between the runs”.

Janica will take part in her next race in a week, in St Moritz, where the women’s Super-G is scheduled for Monday, February 3rd. In the past, she skied well there – she was 4th last season in the race won by Italy’s Karen Putzer. A good result in that race would relax her enough to aim for more in the following weeks. In St Anton, Janica was 5th in the slalom and a DNF in the combined. She pulled out of the giant slalom because of an injury.
